Well I have seen so many cute baby blogs... and I said,"When I have a baby I will definitely have one of those." ...Well here we are... I am a mommy... and this is our bloggy blog. My 9 months "War Story" begins...(technically 40 wks 3 days)
It was a "challenging" pregnancy... mostly because of my vomiting nearly everyday, severe (sometimes debilitating) sciatic pains, and still working my job in retail... standing/walking/sometimes pseudo jogging :-) for more than 9 hours a day, right up until around 2 weeks before I went into labor).
My doctor would say I had a very uneventful, and very healthy pregnancy... gained 30lbs, no complications... even when I would hint that I was in pain from standing and being so active at work... she made no motion to have me stop, or even lessen my hours. Looking back, it was probably good that I remained so active throughout... because it enabled my to keep my weight down, and avoid things like gestational diabetes, and such. The only thing that had her worried, was that the baby was measuring so large at the visits, and that my cervix wasn't showing any signs of dilation. So she gave us an end date of 2/9 (5 days past my due date) to schedule a c-section... should nothing happen.
Well... Monday 2/7 at 3AM... I started to feel pains...
I thought I had eaten something bad, and was having digestive issues. As the day went on I became suspicious that they could be something completely different... especially since the "digestive issues" did not come to fruition as a day spent in the bathroom. By midnight... we decided that they had to be contractions, and decided to time them. Once they were around 7-10min apart Mike called the Doctor (4am) she said to go ahead to the hospital (GBMC). We were sent home ( 1cm, 75% thinned). So instead of driving all the way back to Taneytown, we stayed at my Father's house, for what I thought would be less than a day. A day turned into 5 days... in the guest bedroom... with contractions on average every 10 minutes... sometimes more/ sometimes less. Finally Friday around 9pm, they seemed more regular, so exhausted...
Mike took me back to the hospital. This time I was 4cm... they let us stay. I got drugs as soon as they would give them to me... after 5 days... I didn't want to feel another contraction! HA! So Friday night turned into Saturday... and then Saturday afternoon... we didn't get any sleep... because my epidural kept wearing off, and had to be re dosed... 8 times. My cervix only was at 7cm, and the Doctors said they would just do a scheduled C-section. Then while we were waiting for my turn in the O.R. the nurse turned the Pitocin back on... trying one more time to avoid surgery... within minutes I realized that my epidural had worn off again... and I was feeling everything... and we were now in hard labor... my baby's head was slamming into my cervix that was still 7cm... we both went into distress. Mike ran to find help...
I don't remember much except being thrown onto my side to stabilize the baby... and screaming in pain. Up to that point I was able to breathe through any contractions I felt in between doses... not anymore. Then they rushed me down the halls for an emergency C-section. The Doctors were pretty taken aback at how much more epidural it took to get me numb enough to begin... at least we didn't need to switch to a spinal. phew.
Mike was there with me. I am so lucky... that man hardly left my side while at my Dad's, and while in the hospital he didn't even leave my side to sleep or eat! Then when the doctors said, "It's a girl!... and WOW she is a big baby!!" I was a Sobbing Sally. Even in my heavily sedated state, I was mesmerized by her when Mike brought her over! I had a little girl, I can't believe it!!
Now along with every other mother out there, I have my "Labor War Story"... and I am in no rush to experience it again, any time soon. I do have the most wonderful beautiful gift to show for it.
I am grateful. :-D
